Nothing is free in life right? Well not in the case of free CDL training, sorta. I do not consider this the best way to get you CDL but it is not a terrible option. I want to explore why this may or may not be the best option for you. Here are a few good points to consider when thinking about a free CDL training course with a company.

Free CDL Training

Contracts with companies

Here is the biggest boogie man in the room, the contract. What happens when you allow a company to pay for your training is that you must sign a contract to work for them. This could be for a year or five years. You are locked in and cannot quite or switch companies. This does not have to be a bad thing but it can be if you end up hating your job. So before you sign on that dotted line make sure that you know what to expect being a truck driver.

If you sign a contract make sure that it is with a larger company

The reason I advise this is because I do not want you to be stuck at a smaller company that may pressure you to run illegally, drive in bad weather that you are not comfortable with or to be pressured into something unsafe all over free CDL training. Bigger companies are  on average are more compliant than smaller companies. I am not at all saying small companies are bad and I fully support US small business but I believe there is a greater chance of having issues as a new driver at a small company.

Investigatemyour contract

Never sign for anything unless you read it, especially documents for free CDL  training. Make sure you understand everything from how long your contract is, what happens if you fail your test, how much you have to pay back if you don’t make it and everything else that could possibly happen.

Do you like the company and the freight they haul?

I would take a look at my types of trucking jobs page and choosing a trucking company page first before you sign anything. There is a lot to consider when picking a company than just the benefit of free cdl training.  Remember also that a lot of trucking companies do offer tuition reimbursement.
